I often play a little game with my friends called “Song of the Day” (SOTD). We’ll randomly send each other song titles to represent our mood for that day, to signify our wishes for each other or to simply share the fact that we came across a good ass song. You’re my friends now, so I’ll be playing the same game with you from time to time.
First up is Jay-Z x Kanye West ft. Beyonce “Lift Off” from the 2011 collaboration album Watch the Throne. I despised this song when I first heard it. The melodramatic horns, Bey’s over-singing, Yeezy’s theatrical non-rapping…there is not one element of this song that isn’t corny as fuck. But one day on a flight to Jamaica, I made a quirky discovery that makes listening to this disaster of a track worthwhile.
If you’re like me and love to fly, listening to this song during takeoff makes for an enhanced experience. If you press “play” on this track as soon as the plane starts to accelerate, the nose of your aircraft will have just tilted upward as Beyonce starts singing about taking it to the moon and stars. I thought it was a coincidence at first, but I’ve tested this out on dozens of flights and the timing is perfect every. single. time. “Lift Off” may be one of the worst songs on Watch the Throne, but it takes on a whole new sound at 30,000 feet.
